World Class 2012

FTHS sophomores discuss literature and world events.

A place to create, debate, collaborate.

This Month

Sophomores have finished with Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and are writing and recording personal essays for "This I Believe." They are finishing off the year by reading Ishmael Beah's heartwrenching memoir about his time as a child soldier in Sierra Leone A Long Way Gone.

This will be our classroom away from school, and I can't wait to read your writing and to get to know each of you. To use this site, please do the following:

1. If you were at FTHS last year in 9th grade, you may have signed up for a gmail account. Mrs. Falconer's students did; Mrs. Carr's did not. Open a new tab on the browser and go to google.com and sign in. Mrs. Falconer said your gmail should be lastname.firstname@gmail.com. Password should be your normal password (color!animal, etc...) If you don't have an account, sign up for one. I want you to use first name, period, then last name. It should look like this: firstname.lastname@gmail.com: melissa.wantz@gmail.com If that does not work, try including your middle initial like this: melissa.l.wantz@gmail.com. If that is taken, then use your full name. See me if you have trouble. Pick your color!animal password that you always use.

2. At the top right of this Ning page there is a "sign in" link. If you had a ning in the past, click "sign in." If you have never had a ning page, click "sign UP." Follow the directions, HOWEVER, where it says "full name" just type your first name, last initial and period number. So it should look like this:
Melissa W. -- Period 1.

Remember, do NOT use your last name for this ning site. We want to protect your full name from internet search bots.

3. Wait for me to approve your account. Refresh your screen. (If you are setting up your page at home, you will be notified via email when your account is approved.)

4. If you have time, take the survey in the Forum box below this one. This survey is required homework so make sure you do it prior to next class.

5. Design your Ning page. Use school-appropriate photos and music.

In his ancient work, Plato has espoused that learning the truth is a diffucult task. He explains this through a short story. Three men are in a cave and watch life go past them through shadows on the wall. One is let go and for the first time sees the sun(truth). At first he doesn't want to believe, but as he goes on he learns the truth. He tries to tell the other two, but since they havn't seen it themselves they don't believe. This explains or shows that there are some people out there that… Continue

Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” response

In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” he suggests that with out the willingness to be confused we would all just accept things for how they are, with out questioning anything. In “Allegory of the Cave” there are humans that have been forced to live in an underground cave without the ability to move always staring at the same wall for their entire lives. The silhouettes and shadows that are projected on the wall are the only signs of life the prisoners have ever known, so they don’t question… Continue

Allegory

Confusion can be anoying however it is important because of the fact that it makes you really think about what ever it is your confused about and trying t o over come it. Confusion creates a state of panic and you find yourself in the middle of this panic and in order to get rid of this panic you have to think about the problem and over come it. So confusion however frusterating it may be is not all bad for itm akes you see things from all angles and different perspectives.

Allegory

Many people assume that confusion is never helpful in the path of wisdom. Most people believe that when your confused just quit while your ahead, others say that when your confused you can never learn from being lost in your work. I think those people are mistaken, because confusion is helpful in the path of wisdom. Everyone gets confused or makes mistakes in life, but if you learn from them than you can get far in life, because you become wiser on the subject.

In his ancient work,… Continue

Random scene

The vertical tomb stopped, and the iron clad doors opened, I took my first step into the flooded and power-deprived floor of the sanitarium that is the third floor. The lights are dim or not there at all, there light being replaced by the occasional spark; which at first made me jump back out of the water scared the water was going to fry me. Now thankful for my monstrous chunks of rubber on my feet, I slowly took my second step, the sloshing of discolored water echoed deeply into the corridors… Continue

Allegory of the Cave

Plato Paragraph

In his classic work, Plato has espoused that it is painful and uncomfortable to learn the truth and seek new understanding. He believes that once having known something to be true for so long, learning that you were living in a lie and that your truth happened to be false, is not something many people would want to accept. Those people would either reject their new found knowledge as false, or it would take them a while to adjust to the change. I support Plato's… Continue

Cave Allegory

In his ancient work, Plato has espoused that learning the truth or seeking new understanding is uncomfortable. In his allegory the cave represents our ignorance, and the sun/outside world represents the truth. When we get pulled out of our “cave” we are subject to change and most likely made uncomfortable. I support Plato’s claim for many reasons. I believe it’s always going to be difficult to find the truth. You may live your whole life believing a lie and find out about the lie in your mid-… Continue

Allegory of the Cave

Plao has suggested that there are times in one's life where the truth hurts. Plato tells a story about three prisoners who have been chained to the walls for their entire lives. The chains prevented them from looking behind them so there they hung facing the cave wall, all they could see where the shadows of people and animals that walked by. To them that was the real world but in reality it was far from it. One day a prisoner was released and dragged out of the cave, the blinding… Continue
